Discussion Question 9
This DQ To Be Made Up By You
Directions:
You may have noticed that the Reading assignment for Weeks 12 and 13 says "To Be Determined." That's because YOU will be the one to determine what it will be.
There are quite a number of topics in Klosterman's book that we never got the chance to discuss. There are also a lot that we touched on but didn't explore in great detail.
This is your chance to choose one of those things and dig into it a bit more:
- Choose something we didn't discuss at all, or in great detail. Perhaps you wanted to know more about the Singularity. Or perhaps you wanted to dig into one of those conspiracy theories he mentioned. Or perhaps you want to know more about something you already wrote about; now's your chance to get a bit more information.
- Do a bit more reading on your topic.
- Think about what you'd like to say about it.
- Make up your own discussion question. Post it on the Discussion Board.
- Then answer it.
So your assignment is to choose your own topic, do some reading on it, and then make up a discussion question and answer it.
There are a few ground rules.
- This MUST be a topic Klosterman introduces. You MUST give a quote or cite a page number to show where he brings up this topic.
- You MUST not just post a rehash of something you've already written. This is a chance for you to go further or think more--or even change your mind about something you said before, and say why.
- The usual rules apply: you must have 2 or 3 detailed paragraphs explaining your thoughts, and you must include evidence to support your ideas.
- You MUST post your question and answer to the Discussion Board by the due date for DQ 9.
- You MUST post responses to other people's posts, as usual.
- This DQ will be worth 20 points.
This is not meant to be a huge research project--you already have one of those. It's meant to be a chance for you to decide what YOU want to learn. Just do a quick Google search and read a bit about your topic. Use one or two sources (although you can go beyond that if you wish). Please let me know if you have any questions about any of this.
Have fun!
Post your answer to the English 103 Message Board by the deadline. Your answer is due no later than Thursday, May 18.
Your responses to other students' answers are due by midnight on Sunday, May 21. In order to get the full 20 points, you MUST respond thoughtfully to at least 3 other people's postings.
Remember: This discussion question is worth a possible 20 points. Late answers will receive 0 points. Points will be assigned according to the thoughtfulness of your answers, not by whether they are "right" or not, since sometimes there is no "right" answer. Just be sure your ideas are supported by evidence. We will be using the Canvas Discussion Board for this class.
